Challenges

2015

The Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge

The Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge was a challenge that ran in April and May of 2015.  It was intended to make fun of celebrity Kylie Jenner, and her reported lip-plumbing surgeries.  The challenge involved sucking on a cup for fifteen minutes to an hour and ended up making people’s lips covered in bruises and incredibly painful.

VS 2016

The 100 Layers Challenge

Another semi-frightening challenge, the 100 Layers Challenge consisted of placing 100 Layers of something (typically makeup, but honestly just about anything including tape, nail polish and clothing) onto something and recording the finished product.  It started in mid-2016 with a beauty blogger placing 100 layers of nail polish on her hands and lasted about to the end of the year.  Some of the more scarring iterations included 100 layers of faux eyelashes, 100 layers of foundation and 100 layers of jackets.

2015

The Collarbone Challenge

The Collarbone Challenge consisted of sticking out one's own collarbone and placing coins on top of said clavicle.  Apparently the more coins someone could fit on their collarbone the more attractive they were.  At least this one can’t physically hurt you, so that's a plus.

VS 2016

The Mannequin Challenge

The challenge that basically comprised of holding a pose for approximately 60 seconds while the Black Beatles plays in the background.  Nearly everyone had their own version of the Mannequin Challenge, probably because the only thing you have to do is literally not move.  The Mannequin Challenge is a challenge literally about doing nothing.

APPS

2015

Phhhoto

Remember this app that captured a short video then played it forwards and backwards over and over again?  This app was created at the end of 2014, boomed in 2015, and was officially dead in 2016 when Instagram released its boomerang feature, practically doing the exact same thing.

VS 2016

Pokémon Go!

Pokémon Go! was released on July 6th in the U.S. and took the world by storm.  The app itself involved going out into the real world and capturing the animated Pocket Monsters by walking around and looking for them.  Pokémon Go! was the coolest game to play, until about a month after its release date when it became veritably uncool to still be playing it.  This game also destroyed battery life, using data to run as well as GPS, which probably attributed to its accelerated demise.

PHRASES

2015

On Fleek

While still vaguely used by parents who have finally figured out the meaning and people referring specifically to eyebrows, this phrase was everywhere in 2015.  It basically means particularly good or perfect, but is mostly used to refer to a specific way to style eyebrows.

Vs. 2016

Triggered

This word, originally meaning something that made someone upset, has changed to mean annoyed or angry.  It is still somewhat used, but has died off slightly since its greatest use of around September, 2016.
